This French Chateau style building  was designed by J. and T. Tillman and the foundation stone was laid in 1877  in the presence of the ex President Ulysses S. Grant.  Originally it was to house the Town Hall as well as the Library and Museum.

As a child the big thing to see in the Museum was Wallace , the stuffed Lion.One of the latest items is the very first Nissan car to roll off the production line at the Sunderland Car Plant N.M.U.K. ( Nissan Manufacturing U K ).
