Now more commonly known Cherry Knowle Hospital, Sunderland Lunatic Asylum, as it was originally known was completed in 1895.
This magnificent building finds itself in 2010 abandoned and derelict.
Nowadays ( 2011 ), whilst the old buidings lie in ruins the NHS operate from nearby , somewhat newer building specialising in Adult Urgent Care and Rehabilitation as well as Older Peoples Functional, Organic and Specialist Long Term Care.
On the road leading to the hospital you will pass on the right Ryhope Pumping Station , restored and now a museum.
