Ryhope Pumping Station was built in 1868 and ran for just short of 100 years supplying water to the Sunderland area. Closed since 1967 it is now the base for The Ryhope Engines Museum.
Nowadays the two R & W Hawthorn 100 horsepower beam engines are no longer used although kept in running order by the members of The Ryhope Engines Trust.
Nearby to the pumping station is Cherry Knowle Hospital, which was originally Sunderland Borough Asylum
Heading back towards the Village Green you will see the former Chapel of Ease, built in 1826.
