On the 19th February 1838 Dalton New Winning, later known as East Pit, Murton Colliery was to begin by sinking its first shaft. By the 10th April of that year, two more shafts , each with a diameter of 14 feet  were sunk.

By 1843, one of the shafts sunk reached a depth of nearly 15,000 feet enabling the extraction of coal known as the Hutton Seam. To assist, " Pit Ponies" were introduced that year.

By 1930, 250,000 tons of coal was being brought to the surface by a total workforce of 3,350.

Sadly, on 28th November 1991 Murton Colliery would cease production.
