Sunderland Town Hall

Sunderland Town Hall

This photograph taken in 1919 showing a peace procession marching up Fawcett Street heading North towards the  High Street junction. Notice the stars and stripes of the United states is flying from the roof of this magnificent municiple building. Many say that this was one building that should not have been demolished.
The foundations for the town Hall was laid in1887 and it opened in 1890. By 1904 it was extended because it was too small for its current use.
Fawcett Street was laid out between 1814 and the 1840,s on land that was owned by the Fawcett family. Originally it was a street of 3 and 4 storey houses for the wealthy which led to shops  from the 1870,s.
