Hahnemann Court

March  2011 saw the start of demolition work at Hahnemann Court, Southwick . Built nearly 50 years ago , this landmark tower block was seen as a beacon of modern living  but its current poor structural condition has resulted in it being demolished.

Over the last 3 years, its current owners, Gentoo have been relocating its residents.Where possible, housing was found for the former residents within the local community.

When construction was approved in 1964 it took 18 months to complete. Constructed by John Laing Construction Ltd of which the tender was almost £764,000. All flats had double-glazing and central heating

Covered parking was provided on the ground floor .

Hahnemann Court consisted of 208 flats of which 156 of those were two bedroomed whilst the remaining 52 were one bedroomed flats. Access to the flats was via an external balcony on the second and fifth floors. The construction was based on the Sectra industrial building system.

Above is the last bit standing which was closest to the The Dray and Horses pub which  faced Thompson Road in Southwick. The contractor for the demolition was MGL Demolition. 

Using a Liebherr Crawler Excavator, the buildings was  systematically chipped away with the 13000 ton of concrete going to a recycling facility to be reused as a sub-base for roads and car parks.
