The name Roker was probably came from the old Latin name of Roca which means rock. From the mouth of the River Wear heading North lies the cliff area of Roker. Some old maps discribe this area as Rocus Point as well as Roca and Rocas.

The road going down to the North Pier  was the result of excavation waste from the construction of the North Dock that was built in the 1830,s. Pehaps this is why Rock Lodge was so aptly named. The limestone rocks of Roker continue past Roker Park until Seaburn begins.
