Monkwearmouth , which includes the ancient Parish of St. Peters which dates back to the seventh century. In the early nineteenth century the township would rapidly expand mainly due to the Wear and  the shipbuilding that was to bring enormous benefits to the area. The township would grow even more rapidly when, in the 1820,s the main shaft of Wearmouth Colliery was sunk.
