The remains of the castle that we see today was built at the turn of the 14th century by Sir William Hilton ( died 1435 ) although there are records that suggest that Henry Hilton built an earlier wooden building on the site in 1072.
Like most castles, legends say that there is a resident ghost in the castle. Called the Cauld Lad of Hylton , this is the ghost of Roger Skelton whom it is alleged was murdered in 1609 by Lord Robert Hylton whilst in a rage.
Next to the castle is the derelict Hylton Chapel. An engraving by Samuel and Nathaniel Buck of Hylton Castle in 1728 appears to show both buildings connected by two and three storied structures.
