Church Street , sometime in the past it may also have been known as Ludgate or Leadgate Lane or even Watt,s Lane was an important route leading from the Town Moor starting with Bears Lane , down  to Low Street on the edge of the River Wear where a big community had grown.

The Street itself was part of a through route long before even the Parish Church was built in 1719. It possibly got the name Leadgate or even Lords Gate as a gate was neccessary to prevent cattle that was grazing on the Town Moor from straying.
