Built in 1861 on the last piece of Town Moor land this orphanage ran a regime similar to sailors in the Navy. In fact the boys were taught on a frigate near the back of the orphanage.
This half size fully rigged replica was where they would learn seamanship in addition to the education given in the main building.
The perimeter railings of the orphanage were tipped with replica anchors and the boys, whom mostly had lost fathers at sea wore a naval style sailor suit.
Sadly, in August 2009, I found the building in disrepair, but as security were looking after the place I suspect that a restoration project may be in the pipeline - lets hope so.
