Barnes Parks opening ceremony was carried out by Colonel Thomas Reed on 6th August 1909. Colonel Reed , who's family were printers in Sunderland was instrumental in the acquisition of the park from the Barnes Estate.
Colonel Thomas Reed can been seen in the picture on the left in the black top hat.
It was suggested that the park should have been named Reed Park in his honour.
Mr Punshon of Barnes Estate was paid £8,500 for around 30 acres of the Barnes Estate.
